Kennebunkport, Walker's Point, and George H. W. Bush

In Kennebunkport

Dear Imaginary Friends and presidential peepers,

Being in the general area, we drove from Portland, Maine, south toward Kennebunkport. I was looking for a little glitz and glamor, knowing the Bush compound was there on Walker's Point.

The town is friendly and very casual. The main evidence of wealth is the size of the beautiful homes on Ocean Avenue. The Yacht Club is also somewhat swanky. The Bush home is large but extremely unpretentious. There is a guard house and the guard is looking at you, as if to say, keep moving! Scram!

This is a glimpse of Boothbay Harbor on a beautiful, sunny and crisp August afternoon.

When in Maine, a harbor boat tour is a must.

Christina's World

On the rugged Maine coast, outside the coastal town of Rockland, is a farm belonging to the Olson family. Andrew Wyeth, renowned American artist, loved the rugged desolation of the farm and became close friends with owner Christina Olson, a paraplegic. Wyeth's most famous painting is of the wistful figure of Christina seated in the high grasses of the farm fields, gazing off to sea.

While visiting Maine this past week, I had the pleasure of visiting the Olson Farm, both inside the farmhouse, outside in the fields and out in the cemetery where both Andrew Wyeth and Christina, his friend for life, were buried.

Thuya Gardens, Northeast Harbor, Maine

Dear Imaginary Friends,
You would not believe how short the growing season is in Maine, thanks to the extreme cold weather.  Two months of greenery explode from the earth at once, resulting in astounding flowers, all blooming simultaneously. When Maine blooms, it really blooms! Especially impressive are the hydrangeas.

Edward Hopper and Me: An Unlikely Couple

Maine Lighthouse, 8 x 10"
Dear Imaginary Friends,

Here is my newest painting: my takeoff on the inspiration for one of Edward Hopper's most famous and haunting paintings. If you compare Hopper's painting to mine, you will see that my rendition is more accurate and a great deal less foreboding than his. Not that that would be a qualitative measure of success. His paintings strove for a sense of isolation and quiet.

Your Imaginary Artist Friend,
Patsie
