Dear Friends,

I am very happy to help if you would like information on visiting my beautiful hometown of New Orleans!!

I like to stay in the French Quarter on a quiet street that is walkable to many attractions, such as the Madison Dupuy. (Du-pwee)

You can then walk to the St Charles Streetcar, the French Market, St. Louis Basilica, the Pontalba Apts., the Jazz Museum, the Aquarium, the Presbytere, the St. Louis Number One Graveyards,

You can easily pick up a tour to see plantations such as Oak Alley or Nottaway, swamp tours with gators, etc.

Also there are great eats in the French Quarter that are walkable: Galatoire's, Bayona, casual- the Gumbo Shop, the Famous Fairmont Hotel's restaurant Domenica, and so much more.

Cafe du Monde is also not to be missed for cafe au lait and beignets.

Take a ride down the St. Charles Ave. on the streetcar, and ogle beautiful mansions, dives, and two universities. Visit Audubon Park or City Park for the live oaks bedecked with Spanish Moss.

Listen to live jazz as you walk down touristy Bourbon St. 

Shop for antiques on Royal St.

Magazine St. is a hotspot for all things fun, including the Israeli restaurant Shaya. Many antique shops and regular shops, art galleries, etc. await you!

Sweet Georgia Brown

Dear fellow foodies,

If you long for the comforts of Southern food as I do, then head on over to Georgia Brown's in Washington,DC, for some elevated soul food. You will not be disappointed  by the gumbo, the fried green tomatoes, or the cornbread with honey butter. Lordy!!

As the new Secretary of Defense, I would just like to say that more art will henceforth be hung in the Pentagon. And Seafood Gumbo will be served every Friday in the cafeteria.

Gumbo with Potato Salad on Top! Only in New Orleans

Have you ever heard of gumbo with potato salad on top? Yup, it is for real. The new restaurant owned by the New Orleans based Brennan family is Cafe B, on Metairie Road, in Old Metairie, and instead of serving gumbo atop rice, they serve a floating island of green onion potato salad instead on their gumbo. Fattening? Maybe a tad!

At any rate, it is good. But not as good as their Barbecue Shrimp. You know how New Orleans rolls: Nothing succeeds like excess!

Bayou Bakery, 1515 N. Courthouse Road, Arlington, VA

Dear Imaginary Friends,

If you are stuck in the icy depths of the Washington, DC, area, and need a little spot of Nawlins sunshine, come on down to the Bayou Bakery. It has very tasty gumbo, muffalettas, pralines, beignets, cafe au lait, and the whole durn Creole/Cajun shebang.

The decor is cute, with a see ya later, gator sign, and old painted shutters in various pastels. The prices are so low, you would swear they were paying you to eat there! OH, my. What a deal. A taste of the Big Easy, it is a casual establishment, where one orders at the counter.  The Bayou Bakery has an old school charm.

It is the next best thing to flying to New Orleans.
